Our February meeting will feature three parts: First, Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center founding board member Gloria Bonner will share some of her family stories from her mother who attended Bradley Academy.
Next, Vonchelle Stembridge, Bradley’s Facility Coordinator, will then take us on a tour of the museum, which houses an original classroom, a Civil War exhibit, and an Early Settlers of the City of Murfreesboro and the County of Rutherford exhibit.
These exhibits give us a glimpse of the history of the Academy, whose original structure was built in 1806 as the first school for education of white males only. In 1884, African American students, males and females, were allowed to attend school. The current structure, built in 1917, opened as the new school for African American students in 1918.
Finally, artist Mary Watkins will add to our celebration of Black History Month by telling members about the work of the African American Heritage Society in our county.
